With concerns of depleting nonrenewable energy sources and constantly evolving automotive technology, we have no idea what the automotive landscape will look like in 2038. Highways full of autonomous and fully electric cars are a possibility, though anything is possible.
Earlier this month, we asked our readers what new car they would put in a time capsule for 25 years, and we’re sharing 10 of our favorite responses in this top 10 list. Commenters had to follow one simple rule: pick any vehicle currently on sale, but it can’t be driven until 2038. Here are our top 10 picks for new cars to put in a time capsule for 25 years:
The Ford Shelby GT500 dominated the original Thread of the Day post. BlackDynamiteOnline said, “Any performance car with a manual transmission” including the GT500. “In 2038, you won’t be able to get one pure anymore…You’ll never connect with a car again like you can with a manual.” The NABG agreed, saying, “It’s the high-water mark of the live axle, fire-breathing V8 muscle car era and the last of its kind.”
Several commenters chose the Lexus LFA, including Bagyo who said, “There’s only 500 made in the whole world and most of them were already spoken for before they were even made. Talk about exclusivity.”
Among those who chose the Dodge Challenger, Toycrusher said “it looks like it’s been in a time capsule for 35 years already, so it should be extra interesting 35 years from now.”
The Mazda Miata was chosen by commenters for its simplicity. 92Vectra1.6i said, “A 2013 MX-5 Miata would still be a good choice since it still involves the driver more than 98 percent of the cars on the market…”
Soto chose a 2013 Honda Accord Coupe V6 manual because of how rare an example with low miles in good condition would be 25 years from now.
While there were shouts out for V-8 powered Chevrolet Camaros, DeutscheBundeswehr picked the top-dog ZL1, suggesting that today’s ZL1 will be in 25 years what 1960s classic Camaros are to us now.
The Audi R8 V10 Plus made the cut because we think its design will still look new in 2038. The now-refreshed R8 features all of the automaker’s latest technology including full LED exterior lighting.
Facelessdrone2005 picks the Nissan Juke, but not for its sporty driving experience: “I would put the Nissan Juke in the time capsule. In fact, I’d put ALL Nissan Jukes in the time capsule so I wouldn’t have to see that ugly [crossover] for the next 25 years.”
Luvspeed would put a Hyundai Genesis 5.0 R-Spec in the time capsule next to a Mercedes-Benz S550 “so people could look back and say, ‘Why did this car cost 60k more?’” Though both cars are soon to be replaced by redesigned models, we also wonder how well each car would age after 25 years.
So there you have it. Think you can come up with a better new car to put in a time capsule? Share yours in the comments below.
