Thread of the Day: FWD Ram ProMaster or RWD Ford Transit Commercial Van?

American vans are getting more European. With the exception of the Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana, the American-style van with its snub-nose and single roof height is going extinct. The 2014 Ford Transit and recently revealed 2014 Ram ProMaster are the new Euro vans from American automakers, and in this Thread of the Day, we’re asking how the Ram ProMaster’s front-drive drivetrain will affect sales in comparison to the Ford Transit.

At first glance, the 2014 Transit and 2014 ProMaster follow the same design philosophy: both are offered in varied lengths, with different roof heights, and a mixture of gas and diesel engines. That said, they differ in one key area: the Ford is rear-wheel drive like traditional full-size U.S.-market vans, while the Ram is front-wheel drive. Ram argues that the ProMaster’s front-wheel drive will give it greater cargo capacity than its rivals, as well as superior mileage and a lower step-in height.

Today’s Thread of the Day comes from The_atvman, who wants to know if you’d buy the Transit or the ProMaster if you were buying a fleet of vans. If we open the choices to include the Chevrolet and GMC twins, the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, and full-size Nissan NV, would your answer change? Let us know which van you’d buy and why in the comments below.
