image-669
Ford and General Motors are teaming up to develop nine- and ten-speed automatic transmissions that should launch in time for the 2017 model year. “The collaboration enables both automakers to design, develop, engineer, test, validate, and deliver these new transmissions for their vehicles faster and at lower cost than if each company worked independently,” the companies said in a joint release. The nine-speed will mate with transverse (front-wheel-drive) engines and the ten-speed will serve longitudinal (rear-wheel-drive) applications. ...

Ford Shows Off Electric Fiesta Prototype

image-648
We’ve seen the Ford Fiesta offered with a numbrer of different powertrains, ranging from small three-cylinder engines to turbocharged four-cylinder engines with 197 hp, but until now, we hadn’t seen one powered by electricity, like this new Fiesta eWheelDrive prototype. Like its larger Focus Electric sibling, the Fiesta eWheelDrive is propelled by an electric motor, which is powered by a battery pack – but remarkably, that’s about where the similarities end. image-576
Conventional buttons and knobs that have worked so well in cars for years are returning to the cabins of upcoming Fords. That’s what the automaker has announced in a recent release, saying that future vehicles with MyFord Touch will use more knobs and buttons along with touch-screen displays. Sync and MyFord Touch have helped the Blue Oval raise average transaction prices, but the connectivity technologies have also contributed to huge drops in customer satisfaction as measured ...

image-513
BMW, Honda, and Ford are the big winners of the Ward’s Auto list of the 10 Best Engines for 2013. Once again, four-cylinder engines comprise half the list, six-cylinder engines take four places, and one V-8 engine survives to earn recognition, as well. Ward’s isn’t forgetting about hybrids and electric vehicles — though 11 were evaluated, none made the cut. On the 2011 list, the powertrain of the Nissan Leaf and Chevrolet Volt made the list, ...

Thread of the Day: What New Car Would You Put in a Time Capsule for 25 Years?

image-438
While we have a rough idea of where the automobile is headed, it’s difficult to predict exactly what the automotive landscape will look like in 25 years. Will we all merely be passengers in our autonomous, self-driving cars? Will fossil fuels still power our vehicles? Whatever the case, chances are you won’t be able to buy anything similar to the new vehicles of today in the year 2038. That notion led forum user SickSeries to ...

The MyFord Touch and MyLincoln Touch systems may be technologically advanced, but they also have been the subject of well-publicized problems. Ford has announced it will perform another sweeping round of software upgrades and extend the warranty on the systems by two years. It’s been about two years since MyFord Touch (and its MyLincoln Touch sibling) reached markets, but for Ford it might feel longer. MyFord Touch was widely panned by critics for being confusing and ...
