One-millionth-Ford-Mustang-GT-Convertible

It only took 49 years, but the one millionth Ford Mustang, a GT convertible, rolled off the assembly line at the Blue Oval’s Flat Rock, Mich. assembly facility earlier today. Prior to Flat Rock, the Mustang was assembled in Dearborn, Mich., the same town where Ford’s World Headquarters are based.

Flat Rock Mustang Timeline 300x170 imageBefore the Mustang made Flat Rock home, Mazda laid claim to the assembly facility building vehicles like the MX-6, Mazda6, and the Mazda 626. However, Ford already began infiltrating Flat Rock with the assembly of the Probe and Mercury Cougar before the Mustang was built there. Flat Rock has seen some notable Mustangs roll off the line in recent years, too. Both the 2012 and 2013 Ford Mustang Boss 302, which went on a limited run for the two aforementioned model years,  were assembled in Flat Rock. Other notable Mustangs assembled in Flat Rock include the Shelby GT-H destined for Hertz rental car lots, and the 2008 and 2009 Mustang Bullitt.

Prior to production beginning in Flat Rock, the Ford Mustang used to feature a 4.6-liter V-8 that served up 300 horsepower. Today, you can get a Mustang with a V-6 engine that equals that output, albeit at a smaller 3.7-liter displacement. A beefier 5.0-liter V-8 engine rated at 420 hp is also available. The current Mustang is expected to go on for one more year before the sixth generation begins production. Rumors have been flying about what the 2015 Ford Mustang will look like but unless there’s a major shakeup over at Ford, expect the next generation Mustang to be built in Flat Rock.

What say you? Do you have a favorite Mustang that’s been built at Flat Rock? Sound off in the comment section below.
