Land Cruiser, Cherokee, F-150 Face Off in Cheap Truck Challenge

The Cheap Truck Challenge is exactly what it sounds like. On this episode of Dirt Every Day, the guys from Petersen’s 4-Wheel & Off-Road take their beaters — including a 1993 Toyota Land Cruiser, 1989 Jeep Cherokee, and 1979 Ford F-150 — to Arizona to compete in a series of challenges.

The purpose of the Cheap Truck Challenge is to prove you don’t need to spend big money to have fun on unpaved roads, as each contender bought and built their off-road machines on a $4000 budget. The Land Cruiser had some work done to the front axle among other modifications, but the tires went untouched. In contrast, Harry Wagner spent his modification budget on gargantuan tires for his F-150 that’s equipped with a V-8, manual locking hubs, and a manual transmission. As for the Cherokee, Rick Pewe knows he’s got one of the most iconic four-wheelers, and spent his budge on upgrading the suspension and bigger tires.

A timed rock crawling course is the first event in the challenge, in which host Fred Williams regrets not getting bigger tires on the Land Cruiser after he gets a flat. Next up is a timed hill climb portion, and while the Cherokee did it with the finesse while the other two almost got stuck. It starts to get really messy once they compete in the mud bog challenge, which has them race around a mud bog, and then dive right into it.  Wagner has his tow strap handy because he’s confident that the Cherokee and Land Cruiser will get stuck. Do they?

Watch the video below to find out which low-buck four-wheeler takes the victory.
