Jan. Compact Crossover Sales: Ford Escape Starts Strong, Equinox Closes In on CR-V

The Ford Escape may have finished below the Honda CR-V in 2012, but it’s a new year, and the Blue Oval -badged crossover has started off strong. In January 2013, the 2013 Escape sold more than 2000 units above the Honda CR-V.

The Toyota RAV4 earned a solid spot in fourth place with 11,610 sold, while the Nissan Rogue (8951) and GMC Terrain (8550 units) battled it out for fifth place. Once again, GM’s two large-ish compact crossovers finish above the class leaders if you count the Equinox and Terrain together. Below the sixth-place Terrain was the Subaru Forester with 6565 units sold, however, we wouldn’t be surprised to see a sales boost once the new Forester heads to dealerships.

With a couple of close races, none were as close as the one between the Jeep Patriot and Mazda CX-5, with the American crossover taking the lead for eighth place by only four units. The Kodo design-influenced CUV had to make do with ninth place (5344 units), but the fight will only get tougher when the retouched 2014 Patriot goes on sale later this year. Completing the top 10 most sold crossovers in January was the Hyundai Tucson, selling 3493 examples. The Jeep Compass (3116 units) was not as successful as its cousin, and was followed by the Kia Sportage and Volkswagen Tiguan.
