Honda CR-V Falls Behind Ford Escape in May CUV Sales

The Ford Escape and Honda CR-V have been neck-and-neck each month in compact crossover sales, and while April belonged to the CR-V, May went to the Escape with 29,123 units sold versus the Honda’s 27,298 sales. In third, once again, was the Chevrolet Equinox, which sold 22,918 units.

Coming up short by less than 2200 units for a total of 20,780, the Toyota RAV4 crept up on the Equinox. Meanwhile, the fifth-place Nissan Rogue (17,333 units) wasn’t threatened by the refreshed 2014 Subaru Forester, which landed in sixth place with 10,068 Subies sold. Although the GMC Terrain (7847 units) came in behind the Forester in May, it takes the lead over the Japanese CUV in year-to-date sales with 42,617 sold. The Mazda CX-5 (7128 units) fought hard for the eighth position, selling about 500 units more than the Jeep Patriot, which found 6636 new owners in May. The Subaru Crosstrek rounds out the top 10 CUVs, beating the Jeep Compass by only 19 units.

With 3664 units sold, the Hyundai Tucson faired better than the Nissan Juke, which gained a little bit of momentum in May at 2867 units sold. That momentum allowed it to finish ahead of the Tucson’s cousin, the Kia Sportage (2688 units). Finishing at the back of the pack once again are the Germans, with the Volkswagen Tiguan selling just shy of the Sportage’s total at 2635 units, and the Mini Countryman/Paceman managing 1911 total sales.
