Get Personal with the Motor Trend Video Hosts on New Wide Open Throttle

We can always depend on Motor Trend readers and viewers to ask good questions about the cars we feature in the magazine, website, and on our video channel. Some of you want to take it a step further and get the personal 411 on our hosts, and that’s exactly what’s featured in the latest Wide Open Throttle video.

Many viewers want to know how our hosts landed their gigs. Almost all of them said a bit of luck was involved, a lot of hard work, and just a bit more luck. Scott Mortara and Carlos Lago, both part of the Motor Trend road test crew, began as interns and Wide Open Thottle host Jessi Lang scored her job by winning a contest. The hosts also delve into their personal cars – or lack thereof. Hot Rod editor Mike Finnegan owns an El Camino, but drives a Toyota Tundra to haul around engines. Lago, Mortara, and Motorcyclist editor Ari Henning tests so many wheels at work that owning a personal ride just doesn’t make much sense.

The hosts also reveal how they got into cars. Watch the video to find out whose dad put him in the back seat of a Porsche 911 to calm him down when he was a crying baby. The hosts also brag about top-speed runs. Mortara was close to reaching 200 mph in a Porsche 911 GT2 and Chevrolet Corvette ZR-1, Henning reached an insane 186 mph on a Kawasaki motorcycle, and Finnegan raced a drag boat to 141 mph.

Speaking of which, drag boats happens to be another one of Finnegan’s expertise. One latest episode of Hot Rod Unlimited (featured below), Finnegan takes us into the world of drag boat racing as he helps an amateur racer compete in a competition.
