2013 Lincoln MKZ

It’s no secret that Lincoln is in trouble, and parent company Ford is looking to revive the brand with new products. Although it hasn’t given specifics, during a recent presentation to investors, the automaker hinted that it might build a premium small car or crossover, as those segments are expected to grow exponentially by 2015.

Matt VanDyke, the individual in charge of Lincoln’s development and daily operations, said there are markets “that we’re not playing in today that we can enter that are high-volume segments and growing fast,” said at an investor conference.

If plans for a small car are approved, it will be sold in the U.S. and China, and will compete against Cadillac’s ATS and the Mercedes-Benz CLA.  Accounting for less than 4 percent of Ford’s sales last year, Lincoln, once the top selling U.S. luxury brand, has started to undergo a complete image and lineup overhaul to boost sales.

As Ford started its overhaul of the brand, quality and supply issues slowed the MKZ rollout, and dealers were left waiting for the sedan. Extra checks were needed to correctly fit and finish the problems to bring inventory levels back to normal.  Sales for the luxury brand were down 24 percent during the first quarter this year, but April and May sales gained momentum.
