Ford Mustang To Star In “Need For Speed” Movie

A customized Ford Mustang will serve as one of the stars in an upcoming movie adaptation of the “Need For Speed” video game franchise. A modified Ford F-450 truck, dubbed “The Beast,” will also star in the new film.

UPDATE: A report from Jalopnik suggests that the movie car doesn’t actually produce 900 hp. Instead, that figure may represent what the fictional car will make in the film. We reached out to Ford for comment on the car’s actual specs. Ford spokesman Alan Hall told us, “…the Need for Speed Mustang is a movie car, therefore we made sure to work with the production company to deliver an exciting customized Mustang that met the movie narrative, yet is also a genuine story in terms of performance capability. The 900-horsepower number is consistent with the script of the movie, yet it is also achievable by a modified version of the 5.8-liter supercharged V-8 (and modifying the car is part of the story in the movie).”

The “Need For Speed” film takes cues from the long-running video game series, which launched in 1994. The headlining Ford Mustang has been extensively modified for the movie, with 22-inch wheels, halo lighting for the front grille, a unique body kit with flared fenders, LED fog lights, and a Ford Racing supercharged 5.8-liter V-8 engine good for a claimed 900 hp.

Ford says that the Mustang has been featured in more than 3000 different movies. The very first silver-screen billing was in the 1964 James Bond movie “Goldfinger,” in which actress Tania Mallet drove a Ford Mustang convertible. The film was released just eight months after the original Ford Mustang was revealed at the 1964 New York World’s Fair.

The new “Need For Speed” movie reportedly follows a cross-country race that, “begins as a mission for revenge but proves to be a journey of redemption.”It stars Aaron Paul, Dominic Cooper, Imogen Poots, and Michael Keaton. DreamWorks Studios announced plans to produce a movie based on the eponymous video games in summer 2012.

“‘The Need for Speed’ movie will embody everything that fans of action racing films want to see — hot cars, high-stakes street racing and mind-blowing stunts,” director Scott Waugh said in a statement. The movie is set for release on March 14, 2014.
