Ford won the International Engine of the Year Award for the second year running. The tiny Ford 1.0-liter EcoBoost three-cylinder took top honors this year and in 2012. The awards are chosen by 87 judges from 35 different countries.
The 1.0-liter EcoBoost is turbocharged and has direct fuel injection. Its footprint is only the same size as a sheet of paper, and the engine is light and compact enough that its block can be transported on a plane as a carry-on bag (the stunt is pictured below). Ford says that already in Europe, 30 percent of Focus buyers and 24 percent of Fiesta buyers choose the fuel-efficient 1.0-liter engine. The engine also won the Best Engine Under 1.0-Liter category.
The engine debuts in North America in the 2014 Ford Fiesta later this year. Ford says the 1.0-liter mill will produce 123 hp and 148 lb-ft of torque in the U.S.-spec Fiesta, and should return at least 40 mpg.
The New Engine award went to the Volkswagen 1.4 TSI ACT, which is featured in the new Golf and can shut off two of its cylinders to save fuel. Winning the Green Engine category was Fiat’s 875-cc compressed natural gas engine, which is available in Europe in the Fiat 500 and 500L, as well as the Lancia/Chrysler Ypsilon. Best Performance Engine went to the 6.3-liter V-12 from the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta.
The group also rewards engines in specific displacement categories. In the 1.0-to-1.4-liter category, the judges gave the nod to the Volkswagen 1.4-liter TSI Twincharger (turbo- and supercharged) engine. It’s featured in a long list of Volkswagen, Audi, and Seat products in Europe. The 1.4-to-1.8-liter category went to the BMW-PSA 1.6-liter turbo-four used in Mini S and John Cooper Works models, as well as several Peugeot and Citroën models. In the 1.8-to-2.0-liter category, BMW got the nod for the 2.0-liter turbo-four used in several models, including the 328i and 528i.
The 2.0-to-2.5-liter class went to the 2.5-liter turbo-five engine in the Audi TT RS and RS3, while the winner of the 2.5-to-3.0-liter category was the 2.7-liter flat-six engine from the Porsche Boxster and Cayman.The twin-turbo 3.8-liter V-8 from the McLaren MP4-12C won the 3.0-to-4.0-liter award category, while the 6.3-liter V-12 from the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta made a second appearance in the over-4.0-liter category.
