Ford Fiesta ST rally car front three quarter

Ford will use the Chicago auto show to a racing version of one of its small cars, a special rallying version of the Fiesta ST for the Global RallyCross championship.

The Ford Fiesta ST rally car will compete in this year’s X Games rally events, as well as the Global RallyCross championship. Ford has previously been successful in both series with rally cars based on the normal Fiesta hatchback. Tanner Foust, Brian Deegan and Ken Block will drive the rally cars in this year’s championship. Ford also announced it will be the sole automotive sponsor of this year’s X Games.

Ford plans to continue its partnership with rally-prep company OlsbergMSE, which built Ford’s previous rallycross cars. As such, it’s safe to say the resultant race car will have little in common with the 2014 Ford Fiesta ST introduced last fall at the L.A. auto show; the car pictured here has a full roll cage and is a three-door model, even though only five-door Fiestas are sold in the U.S.

“Global RallyCross has been a great series for us to demonstrate what Ford’s small performance cars can do,” Ford Racing director Jamie Allison said in a statement. “We’re excited about the debut of the Fiesta ST GRC car this year, and it will be fantastic to see Ford’s global performance car compete in four countries around the world this season.”

The regular 2014 Ford Fiesta ST will go on sale later this year with a 1.6-liter turbo-four engine producing 197 hp. The car also scores upgraded brakes and a firmer suspension, as well as a more aggressive body kit mimicking that of the 252-hp Focus ST.
