The Toyota Corolla has long been one of the bestselling models in its class, but how will the new car stack up in the crowded compact sedan segment? To see, we pitted the 2014 Toyota Corolla sedan’s specifications against those of its closest rivals.
As the chart below reveals, the segment is relatively homogenous. Four-cylinder engines of 1.8- to 2.0-liters dominate, and all the cars are within a few inches of one anothers’ dimensions. The 2014 Toyota Corolla has grown slightly, so it is now one of the longest entries — only the Volkswagen Jetta and Dodge Dart are longer. In terms of height and width, though, the 2014 Toyota Corolla is about average for the segment.
The 2014 Toyota Corolla also is solidly average in terms of power. Although the Dodge Dart, Focus Focus, and Volkswagen Jetta offer more powerful engines, most entries in the compact sedan segment tend to produce 130-140 hp. The Corolla’s base engine has the same output as the outgoing car, at 132 hp and 128 lb-ft, but the optional Valvematic engine offers an extra eight horsepower, albeit at the expense of two pound-feet of torque.
Of course, Toyota hasn’t yet divulged two of the most important numbers for this car class: pricing and fuel economy. Compact sedan buyers tend to value those numbers highly, so we imagine the 2014 Toyota Corolla will be priced to fit in with the segment average cost. It’s likely to achieve as much as 40 mpg, too, so as to match up with the thriftiest entries in this list.
